IN THE ZONE
As I think about my Microsoft friends I’m reminded they’re in the midst of the Annual Review season; the time for reviewing past year results and planning for current year success. We’ve probably all heard the phrase “I’m in the Zone!” So, what does that mean? It reminds me of “The Big Leap” as described by Gay Hendrix in his book called, “The Big Leap: Conquer Your Hidden Fear and Take Life to the Next Level.” If I think about work, I think of four quadrants from the BIG LEAP: incompetence, competence, excellence and Genius.
The Big Leap – What zone are you in?
Incompetence Zone – This is the place where we’re performing activities we’re not good at; we might enjoy what we’re doing but we’re not good at them. We’re not good because we don’t have the skills and training to do the work or perhaps we’re not capable of doing the work. Spending time in this zone we risk wasting time; time that could be spent making a difference. Or, we could be taking a job away from someone who’d really love performing this role.
Competence Zone - This is the “I’m good at it” zone. In spite of being good at it, having the skill and capability, you may not enjoy it, be energized by it or be stretched by it.
Excellence Zone – This is a place of being great at what you do, doing what makes a difference in your life and what makes a difference for others. And as a dear friend taught in one of the first coaching courses I attended, this is where Talent, Passion and Experience meet to create Success.
So, the Excellence Zone must be the, be all, end all place right? The one where we are all we strive to be. That’s the thing; many of us strive for this, achieve it and find something’s missing. The missing piece is that which is found in the fourth zone….
Genius Zone - It is the ultimate of the zones; it is everything we get in the Excellence zone with the addition of a key difference. In the Genius Zone there is FULFILLMENT; Fulfillment in the sense of Deep Satisfaction, Aliveness, Energy, feeling Content, Richness, in alignment with our values and our unique purpose.
The question is, are you working in your genius zone? What would it take to move you from the zone you’re in to the zone you crave?
